Janet Finch-Saunders on mental health support across Aberconwy
The Welsh Conservative candidate for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders – has spoken of her wish to see a trained mental health professional in every GP surgery across the constituency. The policy proposal is based on similar calls from the joint-Chair of the Royal College of GPs in Wales.
Crucially, the Welsh Conservatives have also pledged to ensure that all schools, colleges and universities have mental health services for learners. A report published last year by the Children's Commissioner for Wales found that only 43% of children and young people in Wales would be confident getting help form a mental health team, and 39% from school counselling services.
Outlining her positive plans, Janet said:
“Recent correspondence with constituents across Aberconwy has shown first-hand how this last year has brought mental health concerns to the fore. My concern is that this correspondence is indicative of a long-term problem that is facing the Welsh public as a whole. “This is why I am pleased to be calling for a trained mental health professional in every GP surgery across Aberconwy, a policy based on similar calls from the joint-Chair of the Royal College of GPs in Wales. This will ensure more immediate access to trained and specialised support, as required. “I’m also proud that the Welsh Conservatives have also pledged to ensure that all schools, colleges and universities will have mental health services for learners. It is crucial that the next generation feel supported in their well-being, ensuring that their time studying is more effective.”
